wheelie bin row in darlington try skip hire

25 Jul 2012

A row over the introduction of wheelie bins in Darlington has continued after opposition councillors said they could not support the move.

Last month, amid fears that waste collection workers were being put at risk by the continued use of bin bags, Darlington Borough Council said it would introduce wheelie bins to the town.

The decision was met with a mixed reaction across the town, with some welcoming the idea, while others are concerned that they will be difficult for elderly and disabled people as well as those living in terraced streets.

According to the Labour-led council, the bins would cost £1 million to introduce, with an annual bill of £314,000 to run the service. To avoid this cost, residents in the area could try and dispose of their waste using skip hire.
